Our clients Jo and Wendy do know that if they do not eat regularly, they will not lose the weight they want. But nevertheless they also made a basic mistake.
Jo is sitting in my office and the weigh scale just showed that she has only lost 0.6 pounds in the last two weeks. She doesn’t know why that happened and I ask her what she ate before she came to me.
“Well, I skipped breakfast because I did not have time and for lunch I only had an apple so I should be good. I am eating like this the whole week already but the result is disappointing. And I know I can lose weight because I have lost over 50 pounds by now using Cambridge Diet so I don’t get it”.
Actually, Jo’s experience is not unique. Wendy, who I had an appointment with me right after Jo, basically states the same.
“I thought I would lose weight again after the Holidays so I started really strong this year, but the results are not what I had expected. I am only 10 pounds away from my goal weight but I cannot shed those last pounds. And during the day I am hardly eating anything!”
Both clients are trying to lose weight by not eating during the day and are only having one meal at dinnertime. So why are they not losing weight? The reason is probably that they are depriving their bodies from food during the day so they are hungry by dinner time. They then eat a regular meal but most likely they eat a little bit more than usual because they have been hungry all day. So their body is finally getting food after a day of starvation and their body responds to that by immediately storing as much energy as it can in the form of fat, because it wants to make up for the starvation. The result is that both clients are not losing the desired weight.
What I told them is that they should start with a Cambridge Diet breakfast in the form of a meal replacement shake. Easy and quick to prepare and they can drink it on their way to work. Then around lunch time they should have taken their second shake of the day and about 30 minutes before dinner they should have the third one. With that last shake they control their hunger and will not eat as much at dinner. During the afternoon they can have a snack – Cambridge Diet has very tasty chocolate and caramel bars with only 100 calories per bar – to satisfy any craving. This way the food intake is balanced and their bodies will not go into ‘storage mode’.
“You are right, I actually know that I have to do it that way but I thought I could force weight loss faster by eating less; I will change my habit and will see you again in two weeks. ” was Jo’s reaction.
This morning she texted me at 7:30AM saying that she was having a chocolate shake for breakfast! That is how it is done Jo!
