If you follow a 500 calorie diet for 15 days you are likely to lose as much as 15 pounds. The trick is of course to not get hungry during those days. Meal Replacement Shakes are an excellent way to make sure that you are getting the nutrition you need while only consuming about 500 calories daily and not feeling hungry. You take the shakes four to five times per day starting with breakfast and you take a shake every 3 to 4 hours. That way you will not feel hungry and you make sure you are getting the nutrition you need. Most meal replacement shakes contain about a third of the daily required nutrition so when you have consumed three shakes you are good for the day. You can easily live on 500 calories per day and do that for two weeks or even more, but if you really want to do it for a longer period you have to perhaps consult a physician first.
Gaining the weight back on again?
Now after you have followed the two weeks of consuming a low calorie diet you should of course not go back to regular eating again. A normal body needs about 2,000 calories daily to function so if you have been on a 500 calorie diet for two weeks and you return to 2,000 calories the body will start to store those calories because it wants to catch up. So after the two weeks, you should slowly introduce regular food again. Leave out one or two meal replacement shakes and eat a light 400 to 500 calorie meal instead. If you do that you will still continue to lose weight albeit less than in the first two weeks. By doing so you will continue to lose 2 to 3 pounds per week and you can continue this program for a couple of months. Avoid the yo-yo effect at all cost so do not go back to the 2,000 calories at once! Easier said that done you think and for some people that is indeed the case. The best way to lose weight is to do it in the open with the full support of the people around you. Perhaps team up with someone who also needs to lose weight and do it together. Or consult a weight loss coach and let that person guide you.Following a low calorie diet for two weeks and then giving up certainly doesn’t give you the results you are looking for. But it helps tremendously with your motivation if you see the first 10 to 15 pounds melting off your body. And losing weight is all about motivation. If you are not fully committed you will fail.
Have you ever seen Extreme Weight Loss on ABC? The last weigh in at the clinic shows a graph that is always the same and not related to the person on the scale. Small oversight by the creators of the slide on the screen that shows the weight (Chris Powell, you should change that). Here below is a graph of the weight loss of a person I know – I have left out the name but the person is real and so is the graph – who has been on a replacement meal shake diet for several months since January of this year. The pink line represents the goal-line from start weight to her goal and the blue line shows the actual weigh-in results.
The rapid weight loss in the first 2-3 weeks is clear to see but also the weight gain immediately following that. Then the person was corrected by her coach and the weight loss continued. For about the month of February the low calorie diet with the shakes was continued and then slowly more regular food was introduced. Continuing to lose the weight over the summer period turns out to be harder (less motivation, less focus, vacation) and the weight loss pace has slowed down. Of course losing the last 15 pounds will be the toughest because the body has a lot less weight to shed now but I am sure this person will ultimately get there.
And the process started with a rapid weight loss in the first two to three weeks. That kick-started the drive to go on. Did I mention that this person now feels much better about herself than in January? You bet she does! And is she more healthy now than at 195 pounds? Sure she is!
